Communities Don't Have to Disappear Completely
Thousands of subreddits have gone silent. Some were banned. Some lost their moderators. Some just slowly emptied out. This archive preserves what those communities built before they vanished.
How This Archive Works
What gets preserved
Each entry captures the subreddit's purpose, its active period, peak subscriber count, and the story of how it ended. We curate highlights: the most upvoted posts, memorable community moments, and knowledge threads that were central to the community's identity. Full post histories are not stored. We keep the signal without the noise.
Death categories explained
Banned means Reddit removed the community for rule violations. Mod abandoned means the last moderator deleted their account or went inactive, leaving the community unmaintained. Mass exodus means users organized a migration to a different platform. Quarantined means Reddit restricted access but didn't remove it. Naturally died means activity simply dropped to zero over time.
Content warnings
Some archived communities were banned for promoting harmful content. Those entries are preserved as historical records with clear labels. The archive documents what existed and why it was removed. It does not endorse or promote any harmful material. Excerpts are kept minimal and contextualized.
Common mistakes when using archives
People often assume archived advice is still current. Medical, legal, financial, and technical guidance from years ago may be outdated or wrong. Always verify before acting on anything found in old posts. Also remember that community culture shifts. What was acceptable in 2012 might not reflect current norms. Treat these entries as historical documents, not current recommendations.
Why preservation matters
Internet culture is surprisingly fragile. A single admin decision, a burned-out moderator, or a platform policy change can erase years of community knowledge. When r/whatever happens, the search engines lose context. Former members lose their history. Niche communities that solved specific problems disappear and the solutions vanish with them. This archive pushes back against that loss, one community at a time.
Help grow the archive
This project depends on community nominations. If you know a subreddit that belongs here, use the form below. Include the subreddit name, what it covered, when it was active, and what happened to it. Every entry helps paint a more complete picture of Reddit's living history.

Questions People Ask
- What is the difference between banned, restricted, and naturally died?
- Banned means Reddit admins removed the subreddit for violating site-wide rules. Restricted means the community still exists but no one can post. Naturally died means activity slowly dropped to zero without any admin action.
- Can I submit a subreddit that is missing?
- Yes. Use the nomination form on this page. Include the name, topic, active period, and what happened to it. Submissions are reviewed before being added.
- Are archived posts stored in full?
- No. We preserve short excerpts, titles, and summaries. Full post histories with comments are not stored here for both storage and privacy reasons.
- Why do some entries have a warning label?
- Communities banned for harassment or harmful content are preserved as historical records but carry a clear warning. The archive documents what existed, not to promote it.
